I hear a lot about hurricanes on the east coast of the mainland, but I don't hear a lot about them in Hawaii. Does Hawaii get a lot of hurricanes? And if there is a lot, are they really bad?

I think hurricanes are fairly rare events on Hawaii. The only stats I have seen suggest there have been five in the last sixty years which have caused a direct problem. There are still tropical storms and such to deal with though.

That is great to know, I know my mom was worried about that kind of thing with me moving so far away.  It will be nice to be able to set her mind at ease.

Hey Moms worry, that's part of the job! I'm pretty sure she'll be asking about many other things in the weeks ahead so it's good you are here learning and asking. Can she come out and visit you? I think it would really help her see that you are fine!

She can come visit but not often as the flight cost from Michigan to Hawaii is astronomical.  Also I am going to be living in so she would have to stay at a hotel.

I'm really glad I ran across this thread because this was my major concern about moving to Hawaii.  I was scared to death that we would have to face hurricanes and I really didn't want to go.  My husband will be thrilled when I tell him that hurricanes aren't much of a problem and I'm willing to go!

I feel that Hawaii has total protection against hurricanes.  Its geographical location favors conducive weather and climate all through the year.
