I am sure it is not advised to move with "nothing" but I really hate the idea of shipping so much when I go. What are the few things that you would advise taking with you? If I can pack light, I will.

Now that's a good idea that I haven't thought about. Maybe I will sell all my furniture and appliances and then buy me new ones when I arrived in Hawaii.

I think the only light things that you can bring are the things that can't be sold like photos and videos. I almost forgot about our pet, is it wise to bring the pet as well?

I think it would be silly to plan to move with nothing.  Now if you are young enough to really have nothing to move, it could possibly be a viable option.  If you are going to be a beach bum, you probably won't need much to start out.  If you have no solid job you are moving for, consider putting your items back home in storage so that if it doesn't work out you can move back home and not have to buy everything over again.  I don't know what kind of pet you would bring but it would be good to note that all pet cats and dogs coming into Hawaii are subject to locally imposed quarantine requirements.

It really depends on your situation and the type of furniture you have.  Quite honestly, we're planning on selling most of our things, too.  They aren't appropriate for our new Hawaiian lifestyle.  We aren't going to ship appliances for sure.  We'll be taking our bedroom set and our beautiful patio set, but we're not sure about the rest.  The cost of shipping is remarkably high.

Moving without taking anything with you would be much more simple. I would just keep your essentials and family memorabilia that you have. You can replace furniture and such once you get moved.

We are contemplating whether to sell nearly everything or to take the majority of our things when we move.  Do they have yard sales and thrift stores in Hawaii so that we wouldn't have to buy everything new?  How do new prices compare to the mainland states?  I know it's very expensive to ship things.

I plan on moving to Hawaii in the nest few months and have decided to sell EVERYTHING! I mean to ship my furniture, stereos TVs would cost more than it is worth. One thing I am  bit worried about is the replacement cost. I heard that things like furniture and electronics cost a bit more over there.

Any truth to that?
