Hi everyone. We are currently discussing a great offer my husband's company have made. The opportunity to relocate to Hawaii for 1-3 years seems like a dream and of course we are very interested. Right now I am trying to do some research so we make the most informed decision possible. We don't have a definite location yet, though it's looking like either Honolulu or Oahu. Any preferences from experienced Hawaii dwellers between the two for a family?

They are actually both the same, Honolulu is on the Hawaiian Island of Oahu. If your from an area where you are use to traveling in traffic then most areas will work and you can choose more beach areas or country areas or mountain areas but all will be with in 20 minutes to an hour to downtown Honolulu or Waikiki but during traffic it can vary.

The best public schools are in the Manoa area of Honolulu and some of the best Private schools are near this area too the community is both academic and sports enthusiasts. I've been  here since I was 15 and the time has just flown by so 1-3 years is definitely worth the time.

Oops  Shocked. In my haste and excitement I mistyped what I wanted to say! The choice is actually between Honolulu on Oahu and the main island. I think we are going to have some say in the decision so I should have gotten it right the first time. Jen, thanks for the school information. That is important to us, of course. The kids are agitating for somewhere with some life and other youngsters so I'm kinda relieved we won't be on one of the less busy islands.

If you end up on main island of Hawaii I hope you get the Kona side as it's more city where Hilo is more small town and the in between is more country, but you know kids, they'll find fun no matter what.

Thinking of Hawaii in terms of relocation is a good and welcome idea for the place has all the necessary amenities and systems needed for settlements.
