The Hana highway is a pleasant highway to pass through.  It makes traveling a pleasant experience.  You can see along the way many flowing waterfalls, plunging pools and seascapes that are scenic indeed.

Is it close to the edge of the island, or is it further inland? From what you described though, it is a very pleasant driving experience.
