Life in Hilo is not as expensive as living in Oahu, Maui or some other parts of the Big Island. Have you visited Hilo in the past? Do you want to be close to the historic beautiful downtown area, to the shopping areas or the airport? Please be aware that not all of the island is paved and there isnt too many roads so it becomes a bit tricky to drive from one location to another. Depending on which Lava zone you're home is located your home insurance will be higher. The United States Geological Service has a lava zone map and has defined these zones as 1 through 6 with 1 being likely to see another lava flow and 6 not so likely..... Also, some homes are not hooked up to electriciy or connected to the city water system and rely on rain water. Perhaps renting for a couple of months in a specific area will be the best choice, this way you will get to experience life in a particular area and will determine if living in that area is good for you.
