Hilo is a coastal town fronting the large curving Hilo Bay. This " biggest small town" is the biggest settlement in Hawaii. It is located at the foot of three volcanoes, Mauna Kea, Mauna Loa, and Kilauea. Mauna Kea is the world's tallest volcano, and Kiauea is the world's most active volcano. With an annual rainfall of 70 inches per year, it the the wettest city in the USA.

Now that sounds a little scary. Imagine living at the base of 3 volcanos! Has any of these volcanos erupted in the last few years? I did read about some ash in the air but have they erupted to the extent of major damage?

Oh I wouldn't mind!  I like a little excitement in my life! Cheesy  It is curious though.  I've never lived somewhere there were volcanoes.  Do plants and veggies grow well with all of the rain.  I have to have a little garden wherever I am.

We were there once just two days before an event.  It was incredible.  Hilo is one of four places we're considering in our relocation quest.  It's beautiful, but we're struggling with the possibility of being there when another disaster strikes.  We aren't sure we want to tempt fate that much.

Hilo possesses a very large tourism sector too.  This is because it is the second largest city in the state of Hawai'i.  There are a number of movie theaters and shopping centers across Hilo.

I am sure they have some kind of evacuation or disaster plan in case the volcano erupts. It must be amazing to live so close to nature in the raw, it's so easy to overlook the power of the natural elements.

I think there is a great adventure in living dangerously.  People appear to be well prepared in case of any natural disaster.
