Though I'm not sure yet where we will be living I am keen to find out about opportunities for each member of our family in the area. I am a competent Japanese speaker, having studied this at college and lived in Tokyo for a few years. Are there any leads out there for these skills? Many thanks.

Between tourism, realty. and business  being bilingual will be a plus especially the Japanese language, although Korean is up there as well and this applies to any where in Hawaii.

If you are already are fluent in the Japanese language why not go for your japanese interpreter certificate? You can looks for employment at hotels, tour companies or work for the courts.  There is a shortage of Japanese interpreters in the Judiciary.  Court interpreters work on a freelance basis as independent contractors so you can get an additional job during the free time you have. Depending on their performance on written and oral exams, court interpreters are paid between $25 to $55 per hour with a two-hour minimum.

Application forms may be downloaded from the Judiciary's website at www.courts.state.hi.us/courtinterpreting or by calling 539-4860. A $75 fee to cover the costs of the orientation program must accompany the application.

Good Luck.
