Lahaina means "relentless sun" or "merciless sun" in the local Hawaii language, describing the long, hot days from March to November. It was once the capital of the Kingdom of Hawaii from 1820 to 1845. It is the largest census- designated place (CDP) in West Maui with a resident population of 9,118.  The warm waters of Maui are a sanctuary to the humpback whales during winter. Lahaina has many resorts and hotels that cater to the tourists that flock its beaches.

As a tourist spot attracting thousands of tourists every year, Lahaina's economy is dependent on its booming tourist industry. The annual income of families is estimated at a little more than $84,000. As in all places, there are people in the area who have less, but those who are doing well are in the majority. The median resident age is 36 years and the median house value in Lahaina is $259,400.

Lahaina also has the largest Banyan tree in the U.S. It`s located in Banyan Treee Square. It was planted in 1873 and has areal roots which descend on the earth and root to make 16 more trunks. Now that is a huge tree!

Whale watching is one of the main attractions in Lahaina. The humpback whales gather around the warm waters of Maui in late November and early May. The humpback whales is the Hawaiian State mammal and is a protected whale specie.

This sounds like a very nice place to live. I especially like the idea of just sitting back watching the whales for a day. Sounds therapeutic in a way.

Lahaina sounds like one of the more reasonable places to live in Hawaii that I've read about.  Even the median house prices are lower.  We have been wanting to move to Hawaii for quite some time, but don't know if we can make it financially there or not.  At least this place gives us a little bit of hope.
