A Luau is a party. It could be a graduation, wedding, brithday, or just any kind of party. There is hula dancing, music, and lots of food. Usually they serve Poi, Octopus, Kalva pig, Lomi salmon, Opihi, and beer. Most people will wear lei`s when they attend a Luau.

So, a luau is just like a party that we do outside of Hawaii, only with a different name and a different theme. Why do they have to wear leis? Is there any other kind of dancing aside from the hula? What do they do for music?

A lei is a wreath of flowers worn around the neck. It is a symbol of affection upon leaving or arriving. The hawaiian music is usually Polynesian drums  and Ukuleles. They have the hula dancers and fire dancers. I`d love to see the fire dancers.

Hawaiian folk music includes several varieties of chanting (mele) and highly ritualistic music for the dance (hula). The mele is usually accompanied by an ipu heke and/or pahu. There are two versions of the hula. The traditional kahiko and the modern 'auana

And you get a chance to wear the mu-mu dress. Luau is known the world over. Even in other countries they do specify that the party is a luau. So they come all dressed up the Hawaiian way.

I have heard the word "Luau" before, but had no idea what it really was.  I'm really glad all of you explained it so clearly.  They sound like they would be a great party to attend.
