Kalama Valley is a subdivision of the prestigious Hawaii Kai, and is known for providing a peaceful life away from the bustle of Honolulu's business district while still being close by enough for an easy commute. The neighborhood is largely comprised of single family dwellings with a few condo townhouses mixed in, although they are quite costly due to their prime location. Kalama Village Center gives locals easy access to various services as well as a convenience store and a popular Thai restaurant. Locals can also take the short trip into Hawaii Kai proper where the Koko Marina and Hawaii Kai Town Center provide several more shopping opportunities such as supermarkets, movie theaters, several eateries, as well as a very popular Costco. The Valley also has a local park with its own basketball courts as well as plenty of space for other outside activities located nearby. The area is also home to Sandy Beach which is considered one of the best places to body board due its large waves and unspoiled white sands. Makapu'u Beach and the Makapu'u Lighthouse hiking trail are also popular amongst tourists and locals alike, especially those who enjoy whale watching. Finally, there is the Queen's Gate Golf Course which is perfect for enthusiasts of varying skill levels to have a great day out. Kalama Valley is a part of the Kaiser school district and includes six elementary schools, as well as Niu Valley Middle School and eventually Kaiser High School.
